Gentle Laser for Clearer Skin

Fanny Garnier, master aesthetician and founder of La Beauty Boutique

By Fanny Garnier, founder and master aesthetician · Updated October 2026

Aerolase laser treatment in North York, Toronto, is a gentle way to treat acne, facial redness, dark spots and dull, uneven skin, with each treatment booked by skin concern. At La Beauty Boutique, we use the Aerolase Neo Elite, a newer platform than the LightPod Neo. It normally needs no numbing cream, needles or cooling.

Aerolase Laser at a glance

  • Appointment time: 15 to 75 minutes, depending on the treatment.
  • Price: $50 to $450 per session (full price table below).
  • Downtime: mild redness that usually fades within a few hours.
  • Sessions: usually 3 to 6 for acne or redness, 4 to 8 for pigment.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Aerolase Treatments?

Aerolase suits clients of all skin types and skin tones (Fitzpatrick I to VI) whose main skin concerns are breakouts, redness or pigment. Not every concern needs a laser, so a facial, peel or microneedling plan may come first.

Good fit (the skin conditions we treat on the Neo Elite):

  • Active acne and active breakouts, plus the red marks acne leaves
  • Rosacea, diffuse redness, broken capillaries and spider veins
  • Sun spots, age spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Melasma, with careful, conservative settings
  • Dull skin quality, fine lines and uneven surface texture
  • Skin tags, cherry angiomas, warts and small-area hair removal

Wait or choose another treatment if:

  • Indented acne scarring is the main concern: microneedling works better
  • Loose skin is the goal: radio frequency skin tightening is the closer match
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding, or take isotretinoin: tell us first
  • You have a cold sore, active infection, keloid history or rosacea flare
  • The treatment area has a fresh tan or recent injectables
  • A mole is changing or bleeding: a physician should check it before any laser treatment

How Does the Aerolase Neo Elite Work?

The Aerolase Neo Elite is a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser that fires a 650-microsecond pulse. Aerolase reports that this microsecond pulse is shorter than the thermal relaxation time of the target, so laser energy is delivered before heat spreads into the surrounding skin.

Health Canada licenses the Neo Elite as a Class 3 aesthetic and dermatological laser under licence #107498, first issued on 14 March 2022. The “30+ indications” that Aerolase quotes are US FDA clearances, not Canadian ones, so we describe the laser by skin concern rather than by a list of approvals.

What the pulse does for each skin concern:

  • Acne: Aerolase describes three actions against acne: heat that destroys C. acnes bacteria, selective heating of the sebaceous glands to normalize oil production, and closing the small vessels that feed inflammation. The company’s own trial reports an 84% reduction in lesions over a 10-week course.
  • Redness and veins: hemoglobin absorbs 1064 nm light, so the laser can treat persistent redness and vascular concerns such as facial veins.
  • Pigment: the laser targets the melanin in pigmented lesions such as sun and age spots, with lower settings for melasma.
  • Skin rejuvenation: controlled heat in the dermis supports collagen production, so skin quality and early signs of skin aging improve over a series.

Our clinic uses the newer Neo Elite rather than the older LightPod Neo. The handpiece stays just off the skin, and no gel is needed.

What Happens at Your Aerolase Appointment?

An Aerolase appointment in North York takes 15 to 75 minutes and follows five steps:

  1. First, we review your concern, skin type, medications and recent sun exposure.
  2. We photograph the area so progress can be compared later.
  3. The skin is cleansed, and eye protection goes on.
  4. We adjust the Neo Elite settings for the area and start conservatively on a first visit. Most clients feel the laser pulses as mild warmth with minimal discomfort.
  5. Before you leave, we go over aftercare and, for a series, the timing of your next visit.

Aerolase Downtime and Aftercare

Aerolase has little to no downtime: most clients return to normal activities immediately, and any mild redness fades within a few hours.

Sun protection matters most for pigment work, since UV levels in southern Ontario are highest from April to September.

How Many Aerolase Sessions Will You Need?

Acne, redness and pigment usually take 3 to 8 Aerolase sessions, while small spots such as skin tags are assessed at the visit. The table shows the series we usually plan; your own treatment plan is set at the consultation.

Aerolase vs IPL vs Microneedling

Aerolase is a single-wavelength laser, IPL (intense pulsed light) uses a broad band of filtered light, and microneedling uses fine needles with no heat. For redness, pigment and acne on any skin tone, we usually recommend Aerolase; for indented scars, we recommend microneedling.

  • Choose Aerolase for active acne, rosacea, visible veins, age spots or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, including on deeper skin tones.
  • Microneedling is better when the problem is texture you can feel: rolling or boxcar acne scars, enlarged pores and fine lines.
  • IPL mainly suits fair, untanned skin with sun damage, and it is not on our menu.

The IPL risk on darker skin is documented: a 2026 case series in the Australasian Journal of Dermatology linked complications in four patients with skin of color to broad-wavelength light and operator skill.

The evidence for Aerolase on darker skin tones is stronger, but still limited:

  • Why 1064 nm: epidermal melanin absorbs 1064 nm light less than it absorbs shorter wavelengths, and the 650-microsecond pulse limits heat build-up, so more energy passes through the surface pigment in deeply pigmented skin.
  • 1064 nm in skin types IV to VI: in a study of 150 patients who had long-pulsed Nd:YAG hair removal, 86% had no complications, and all complications were temporary (Rao and Sankar, Lasers in Medical Science, 2011).
  • The limit: a 2013 review in the British Journal of Dermatology notes that lasers still carry a greater risk of pigment change in darker skin, and that data on types V and VI are scarce.
  • Our approach: Fitzpatrick typing, recent sun history and conservative first-visit settings for melanin-rich skin.

Aerolase Laser FAQs

Aerolase does not usually hurt. Most clients describe mild warmth or a quick snap, and no numbing cream or cooling is normally needed.

At our Toronto clinic, Aerolase costs $50 to $450 per session: $250 for NeoClear acne treatment and $450 for full-face rosacea, melasma, pigment or rejuvenation treatments. The cost of a series is the session price multiplied by the number of visits in your plan.

Is Aerolase safe for melasma? YES! Aerolase is one of the only lasers that's truly safe for melasma-prone skin - and one of the best tools we have to fade it. Its gentle 650-microsecond pulse targets pigment deep in the skin WITHOUT overheating it - and heat is exactly what makes melasma flare. No downtime, safe for every skin tone, all year round. It fades the pigment AND calms the inflammation behind it. Pair it with your daily SPF and the results keep building.

Yes, as long as there is a gap of at least four weeks between Sculptra and Aerolase on the same area. Tell us about any recent injectables before the session.

Treated spots such as skin tags and cherry angiomas usually do not return, though new ones can form. Acne, rosacea and melasma can come back, so most clients plan maintenance visits and use daily sun protection to keep their results.

Yes! Aerolase pairs beautifully with other treatments. Many clients combine it with a HydraFacial, chemical peels can be planned around a series, and Forma or microneedling can be added for even stronger tightening, texture and glow. We'll build the perfect combination and timing for your skin.
