One of the most common things new clients tell us, almost apologetically, is: “I know I’m not supposed to microneedle while I’m breaking out.” Somewhere along the way, that became the standard advice – wait until your skin is perfectly calm, then treat it.
Here is our honest answer, from people who perform this treatment every day: we do treat active breakouts, and microneedling helps them heal faster. An active breakout is not a reason to cancel your appointment. Very often, it is the reason to book one.
This guide explains why, what results you can realistically expect, and what a treatment looks like at our North York clinic.

The myth: “never needle active acne”
The caution comes from a reasonable place. Done carelessly – wrong depth, poor hygiene, no screening – needling inflamed skin can spread bacteria and make things worse. So the industry defaulted to a blanket rule: don’t touch active acne.
But a blanket rule and good practice are not the same thing. In a professional treatment room, with a sterile single-use cartridge, careful technique and a proper screening first, microneedling over a breakout does something useful: it triggers the skin’s own repair response exactly where the skin is already trying to heal. We screen every client, every time – there are moments when we will recommend waiting, like a rosacea flare or irritated, sunburned skin. A breakout is not one of them.
How microneedling helps breakouts heal faster
Microneedling creates thousands of controlled microchannels in the skin with a professional device and a fresh sterile cartridge for every client. Your body reads those microchannels as a call to repair, and responds in three stages:
- It releases growth factors – the skin’s own healing proteins – into the area.
- It produces fresh collagen and elastin and speeds up the turnover of skin cells.
- Over the following weeks, it remodels the tissue, smoothing texture and strengthening the skin.
For an active breakout, that means the healing process your skin was already attempting gets real momentum. Clients routinely watch a stubborn breakout settle days faster after treatment than it would have on its own.
There is a longer-term benefit too. Early research suggests microneedling can help calm overactive oil glands, and excess oil is one of the root drivers of acne. Over a series of treatments, many clients find they simply break out less.
What results can you expect?
After one treatment: skin looks fresher and brighter – microneedling makes your skin glow after just one treatment, and keeps improving your complexion for months afterward. Active breakouts typically settle noticeably faster than they would have alone.
Over a series: this is where the bigger wins live. Post-acne marks fade as the skin remodels. Shallow scars soften. Enlarged-looking pores refine. Overall texture evens out. Collagen change is real, but it is gradual – scar, pore and texture goals usually need a series, and for noticeable results we recommend at least 3 sessions.

What about acne scars and marks?
Once breakouts are under control, microneedling keeps working on what they left behind. The same remodeling response that speeds healing also rebuilds the uneven tissue left by old breakouts – shallow scars, rough texture, the marks that linger long after the spot itself is gone. This is gradual work measured in weeks and sessions, not days, and we will always tell you honestly what your skin can achieve.

What a treatment looks like at La Beauty Boutique
Every appointment starts with a consultation and screening – we look at your skin, your history and your goals before anything touches your face. The treatment itself takes about 75 minutes. We use a professional microneedling device with a new sterile single-use cartridge for every client and a sterile hyaluronic-acid glide, and every treatment includes the neck, plus the under-eye area when it is suitable after screening.
If you want to give your skin extra support, we also offer exosome and PDRN add-ons, applied right after microneedling while the microchannels are still open: faster healing and less downtime, an extra collagen boost, and calmer redness with a stronger glow in the days after. We will recommend the add-on that fits your skin.
Between sessions, many of our acne clients keep their progress going with a HydraFacial to keep congestion managed – here is what results to expect from a HydraFacial – and for some skin, we may recommend pairing microneedling with our Aerolase laser treatments. Your plan is built around your skin, not a template.

Aftercare for breakout-prone skin
The rules are simple: no makeup for at least 3 days – ideally a full week – and no unnecessary touching for the first 24 hours. Sunscreen can start on day 3, and daily after that. Skip retinoids, acids, vitamin C and scrubs for at least five days, no hard workouts, saunas or heavy sweating for 48 hours, and sleep on a fresh pillowcase. Your skin is doing visible repair work; give it clean conditions to do it.
Frequently asked questions
Can you microneedle over active acne?
Yes – in our clinic we do, and it helps breakouts heal faster. Every treatment starts with a screening, and there are cases where we will recommend waiting, like a rosacea flare or irritated skin. An ordinary breakout is not one of them.
Is there downtime?
Most clients are red and warm, like a light sunburn, for the first 24 hours. For most, it settles within 2 to 5 days.
How many sessions will I need?
For noticeable results we recommend at least 3 sessions. Deeper scars and texture goals usually need a series, spaced to let the skin repair between treatments.
When will I see results?
Skin looks fresher within days and keeps improving for months as collagen builds. Breakouts often settle faster after the very first treatment.
Do you use exosomes or PDRN?
Yes. They are applied right after microneedling while the microchannels are open – faster healing, an extra collagen boost and a stronger glow in the days after.
Can I wear makeup after?
Not for at least 3 days – ideally a week. Sunscreen is fine from day 3.
Ready to stop waiting for your skin to clear?
If breakouts have been running the schedule, come in while they’re active – that is exactly when this treatment does its best work. Book a consultation and we will screen your skin, answer everything honestly, and build a plan around what your skin actually needs.
